A diet is a particular selection of food eaten that is meant to improve your weight, blood pressure, or any other health problems or concerns. Different diets explain how often to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, and so on.

It depends on the context of it's use, there are really 2 major uses of the word diet in modern culture.

The first is to describe the general food intake and consumption behaviour of a person or animal, it is often used in reference to what the diet contains or the status i.e.

She has a good diet

or

His diet consisted mostly of chips

In these cases the use of the word is more often than not scientific or medical.

The second use is the modification of someones standard diet in order to manipulate their body weight.

This can be to gain or lose weight but more often than not is related to loosing weight. In these cases the word diet is usually tagged onto another word or set of words to reference the specific diet someone is using such as "Atkins Diet" or "Cabbage Diet".
