A primary consumer obtains its energy from producers (i.e. plants). Therefore a rabbit is a primary consumer because it eats grass and other plants.

A secondary consumer eats primary consumers, therefore they do not get their energy directly from plants. The fox that eats the rabbit would be a secondary consumer.

The relationship is a predator - prey relationship. The secondary consumer preys on the primary consumer.

A primary consumer eats plants, or producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers, and tertiary consumers eat the primary consumers. Let's look at this, a butterfly drinks nectar from a flower, primary consumer and producer. Next, the butterfly flies over the edge of the lake and a salmon jumps out, swallowing it whole, secondary consumer. Finally, a Bald Eagle swoops down and catches the salmon to feed it's eaglets, tertiary consumer.
