A conductor allows energy (such as electricity or heat) to pass through it with little resistance or impediment. Copper is a good example, as it is very good at transferring both types of energy: which is why it's used for both cooking pots and electrical wiring.

An insulator blocks or slows down the transfer of energy. An electrical insulator such as the plastic covering used in electric cords, for instance, allows you to handle the plug without getting electrocuted by the current. And an ice chest or cooler blocks warm air from getting inside the container, giving you an easy way to bring ice cold beer to the beach or on a picnic.
