Of the fossil fuels, natural gas emits less carbon dioxide than oil (though the gas itself, methane, is a powerful greenhouse gas and there are serious leakage problems with its use).
Any of the renewable sources of energy are better than oil. Solar, geothermal, wind, hydro etc, all have zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Currently: Biodiesel, Hydrogen cells, Propane and electrical power. There are hybrids that use more than one form and solar powered cars are available but have limited use and power.
solar power is an alternative to fuel
They are called renewables. (though strictly, nuclear power is not a fossil fuel and is not renewable). They are called alternative energy sources.

increased use of alternative energy sources. -- A+
· To protect against harmful by-products of major sources of energy · To preserve many of the natural resources that we currently use as sources of energy
In a sense it is, but only if your life-time approximates a quarter of a million years. For ephemeral humans the answer is no.
Natural gas has long been considered an alternative fuel source to that of conventional petroleum fuel sources.

Common ' alternative ' fuel sources. The one listed below are quite easy to create on a small and large scale. Wind Power Solar Powar Biomass (methane, ethanol) Mirco Hydroelectric
The answer depends on how to define alternative energy sources.Alternative energy sources may be typically and interchangeably for renewable energy sources. If this is the case then the five energy sources used as alternative are:Solar,Wind,Biomass, wave, andTidal alternate energy sourcesAlternative energy sources may be defined as sources of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources without undesired consequences of replaced fuels Typically excluding fossil fuels and nuclear energy). If this is the case then the five energy sources used as alternative are:Coal as alternative to wood,Petroleum as alternative to whale oil,Alcohol as alternative to fossil fuel,Coal gasification as alternative to expensive petroleum, andRenewable energy as alternative to nonrenewable energy. For more details it may be referred to:http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_energy
Alternative energy
An alternative fuel is any variety of fuel which is not diesel or petroleum-based.
Develop alternative energy sources - solar panels, nuclear power, water power, etc.
Parkers Guide does not show alternative fuel vehicles that run on alternative fuel sources such as hydrogen and natural gas. The site directs consumers to greener vehicles like hybrids. Also, a guide directs consumers to saving money through maintenance, preparation, planning, and changing driving habits.
