Best Answer

This is called a barefoot horse, and it is healthier for the horse because horseshoes restrict bloodflow up and down the hoof, conduct cold into the leg and hoof, and sends vibrations up the horses leg, damaging tendons and joints. Horseshoes can and will actually shorten a horses lifespan. Domestic horses only live a fration as long as wild ones do.

Horseshoes cause several more problems, as you can see in the related links below.

Should you ride your horse on a road barefoot?

The answer to this will vary. You can ride a horse on a road barefoot, provided the horses hooves are strong enough to handle it. If however the horse becomes sore or chips/wears down it's hooves too quickly you would do better to put boots or shoes on the horse for road riding.

What American breed of horse is known for its excellent feet and legs and should not have to be shod for everyday function?

All horses should be barefoot; there are several natural farriers who have never been unsuccessful taking a horse barefoot with the wild horse trim. But the breed you have probably heard about would be the mustang.

Should you trail ride your horse barefoot?

Second Answer:I am glad to hear you inquire about barefoot horses. It truly is the best way. A general rule as to whether your horse can ride on that trail barefoot is to ask yourself "Is this terrain rougher than the terrain my horse lives on at home?" If the answer is yes, that the ground is rougher than at home, then no, you shouldn't ride barefoot. Use boots. But, if the trail is the same or less rough than at home, then yes you can! To condition your horse's hooves for any kind of terrain, start riding on roads and/or gravel for short periods of time at the walk, then build up to faster speeds and longer time. The horse's feet will become tough enough to withstand the roughest of terrain. One Answer:i trail ride barefoot but it depends on the trail, if the trail is rocky or tough then shoe your horse.

You could if you are not needing to ride him on rough surfaces or paved roads. If he's still green and out on the pasture all the time, then yes, you can leave him go barefoot.

Does a horse have to be put down with navicular?

NO! It can be cured with barefoot trimming! Seek out a farrier who specializes in barefoot trimming (I don't advise one who also shoes horses- he likely doesn't do a real barefoot trim, but rather the normal trim that they do for shoeing, which won't work.) In the related links you will find a page full of success storys of horses with hoof problems, including navicular, who were cured with barefoot trimming.

What does it mean for a horse to forge?

Forging means that the horse is hitting the front leg with the hind leg on the same side. You'll here a metallic clinking sound as the shoes hit each other if the horse is shod. If the horse is barefoot you may here a dull thunking sound.

Is it ok for a shoeless horse to run on the road?

Shoeless or Barefoot horses can do most anything that a Shod horse can. Just make sure that the horses hooves can stand up to the work being asked of it first.

Can a horse be harmed from not having horseshoes?

Yes, a horse can be harmed without having horseshoes if it is walking on rocky ground. Rocks can get stuck in the horses hoof and injure it. Imagine if you were walking through rocky terrain barefoot!! Ouch! But as long as you are careful and picking his hooves once or twice a day you should be fine. Answer2: Horses evolved to go barefoot over all types of ground. However in domestic situations the horses hoof often does not grow enough to keep up with barefoot wear and it will need to be shod or have hoof boots used when being ridden. It is best to consult with both your farrier and equine veterinarian to see if your horse can go barefoot, if they say it's OK then go ahead and give it a try.
