This dates to when music was sold on records. The small ones, normally a 45 speed, had one selection or song (on each side), generally the one that was considered desireable enough to buy. An album contains many selections on each side, frequently including the one that received airplay and was "charting" too. They cost more. Along the way, singles became much less popular, and alblums themselves became more a cohesive piece of art...as in Sgt. Peppers Lonley Hearts Club alblum, Jethro Tull Acquaman, etc., where the different songs had some relation to each other.

Now, with iPod downloads and such, it seems the industry is back to selling single hit songs from artists.

An EP was a few song (normally 3-5) released by an artist as compared to a whole album which contained normally 8 or more. An EP was used to promote an artist's music very much like a single which normally had 2 songs or 1 song and an alternative version of the same song.

What is the difference between record and album of the year?

It might sound like a subtle difference, but it’s actually pretty substantial. Song of the Year goes to the songwriters, and Record of the Year goes to everyone involved in the recording process—engineers, producers, and artists. So, therefore, Song of the Year awards a song with outstanding melodies and lyrics, while Record of the Year recognizes the best mixing, mastering, production, and performances.
