Alternate answerDachshunds eat what they want to eat. Mine mostly prefers meats, eggs, vegetables, cheeses, and rice. Sometimes dachshunds like to eat weird things like razor blades, flowers, wood, and the stuffing from toys, but this should be discouraged. Some dachshunds will even eat dogfood on a whim. So far as I can tell, they don't eat slugs, tomatoes, people, or lightbulbs.

Although any breed can eat canned dog food it is not recommended unless your dog needs a special diet or for lack of time to prepare the dog's dinner.

Most canned dog food has meat and meat byproducts listed as an ingredient but all meat used for dog food is 'unfit for human consumption.' It mostly consists of ear, anus, beak, feather, hoof or nail, etc. All of these things "have protein in them," said my vet but he doesn't recommend it.

Dachshunds have unusually strong stomachs and so they can have a varied diet that most breeds cannot. Rice (brown rice is best) and chicken is the fool proof dinner. If you can add some chopped (cooked or uncooked) carrots or squash or the head of broccoli (cut fine), or green bean, do it!

They also love different types of meats and can handle more fat and protein then most humans. Your vet can tell you why that is.

Some love to eat apples and carrots but *DOGS CANNOT eat raisins or grapes (which causes renal failure and possible death).

**This is just touching the surface but as long as you pair a meat; lamb, pork chop, meatballs, chicken, veal, etc.. with a veggie and possibly rice - you can't go wrong!

*Plain or vanilla Yogurt is also recommended. If they like it, it's good for their coat.

As a treat on a hot summer day I like to freeze chicken broth into ice cubes. My dachshund loves to lick and cool off with them.

Everything! So be careful what your dachshund gets a hold of, because they are prone to dietary indiscretions and can become very ill. Give your dachshund high quality treats, like Buddy Biscuits and Wellness jerky treats, but don't overfeed. They also love peeled carrots cut into quarters and pieces of apple (but make sure they don't get apple seeds... these are very poisonous to them).
