As the name would suggest, VoIP is a group of technologies that allows for voice to be transmitted over the Internet rather than through the PSTN. Although VoIP providers also offer related services like sending messages or videoconferencing, its essential function is to power voice calls. The fundamental difference between normal phone calls and VoIP is that the latter evolved from IP-based technologies rather than telecommunication standards.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It enables you to make calls over your Broadband Line. You do not need any other lines for VoIP unless you are a very high data user then you may need two Broadband Lines, one for voice and one for data. Savings to be made over Traditional Systems:- VoIP Systems are significantly cheaper than Traditional Systems. Traditional Systems require Cards and Licences to enable full functionality. VoIP has all the features in the cloud. VoIP allows you to make free calls between your sites. One or two Broadband Linesare all you need for VoIP so you can cancel any other phone lines. VoIP is Flexible- Should you relocate your phone numbers will go with you, meaning you will never have to change phone numbers again. You can use your Mobile Phone, Computer or Tablet to make and receive calls as you would your office phone retaining your office phone number. Should you go abroad you can either take a VoIP phone with you and plug into a router or use your Mobile Phone, Computer or Tablet. You can use any of these as if you were in the office. The system can be set up to route calls anywhere. Take Advantage of these great Features- Auto Attendant IVR Voicemail Music on Hold Ring Groups Call Logging and Wallboards and more>> Not sure what the features are?

VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol. This protocol facilitates the travel of your voice calls through the Internet, rather than through traditional phone lines

In short, it allows you to make phone calls over your broadband Internet connection. Because there is no need for traditional line rental, it can be substantially cheaper than traditional phone system solutions. VoIP solutions offer all the features of traditional phone systems and much more to make the communication easier, e.g. you can easily set up a call redirect, so if you are not able to get to your office, you can answer your deskphone calls on your mobile.

VoIP is a general term for transmitting technologies for delivery of voice communications over the Internet.

Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony and Internet telephony, as well as voice over broadband, broadband telephony, and broadband phone, when the network connectivity is available over broadband Internet access.

Besides voice over, they also work with other packet-switched networks.

What this means is that you will be using an internet based system for your telephone service rather than the traditional public switch telephone system. VOIP is Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is a method of transmitting voice signals over the Internet to mimic the old hardwired telephone that businesses had previously relied on for more than a hundred years. For a regular telephone to work with a VOIP service a device is needed to connect the telephone to the Internet. For homes and businesses a broadband, or high speed, Internet connection is needed to handle the amount of data transmitted over the VOIP device. Some VOIP devices can plug into a USB port on any desktop or laptop computer while others need to be connected by Ethernet cable to a router.

VOIP only works when the Internet is working, which usually means that the phones go out when the power fails. The old hardwired telephones had battery backups maintained by the telephone company to keep the phones working even during a power outrage. Today most homes also have a cell phone in the house to provide redundancy during power or Internet outages, but that wont work for most businesses. In fact, many home VOIP providers can be set up to automatically forward to another number if the system should fail due to a power outage or other cause.

VOIP is even in use today by big businesses that require hundreds of telephone numbers and individual phone connections known as a PBX, or Private Branch Exchange, serving a company or office. VOIP systems can even include support of menu options for consumers dialing in to get to the correct party. VOIP and other modern telephony technologies such as cell phones have almost made the old hardwired telephone obsolete.

Be careful when picking a VOIP provider for home use. There are providers that offer ridiculously low monthly fees in their marketing to get new customers. However, to support those low monthly fees, the provider installs software on the user’s computer that must be kept active in order for the phone to work. The software targets advertisements to the user based on such factors as what phone numbers the user is calling. Many object to this sort of intrusion and elect to pay a higher price to avoid it.
