For one thing, Ulysses S. Grant was remembered for having compassion, and not having unnecessary cruelty to the Confederates. He actually was not totally happy that he won, he felt that the death and carnage was unnecessary bloodshed which is kind of strange. Mostly, he was remembered for being a victorious General, the President to bring the States back together and a religious man.
