"The Shining" is considered a classic Horror film that can be pretty intense and creepy due to its chilling atmosphere, psychological tension, and eerie soundtrack. The film combines elements of psychological horror and supernatural horror to create a feeling of unease and discomfort for viewers. Overall, it is known for its ability to create a sense of dread and suspense that can be quite frightening for some audiences.
It is more of a mental movie; it gets in your head and makes you think something will happen next, and it may or may not. It depends what type of peron you are. If your scared of Scream or any thing like that, then it may be scary.
It is a fictional psychological horror movie/book, about a man with a violent and alcoholic past and his son (danny age 5) and his wife (wendy). To get extra money he signs up for a caretaker job at the overlook hotel throughout winter. Before the winter begins, they meet the hotel chef (halloran) who talks to danny about his strange power which allows him to read minds, see the future and see spirits. halloran has the same power, but is not as strong as dannys.
Danny sees things like the hotel burning, a mallet crashing and his dad hurting him. he also sees 'redrum' written all over the hotel.
the hotel gets snowed in like every other winter, meaning the family most cater for themselves. danny, walks into a room , which hallorann told him not to go in, and a dead lady that was rotting and smelling of fish strangled him.
strange things happen throughout the whole story, meanwhile the father (jack) is having trouble not having alcohol, one day whilst sitting at he empty bar, a bartender appears and starts giving him alcohol, REAL ALCOHOL. this bartender is the old caretaker, the one that murdered his family and then died in the snow. he tells jack that his family is dragging him down and that he should get rid of them.
one day jack snaps and tries to kill danny, and wendy protects danny. after a while of being locked in a bedroom, they have no food left to eat, wendy gets a large butcher knife and goes to collect some food for herself and danny. whilst collecting food, jack almost murders her but she stabs him in the back killing him. just as she goes to get danny, he stands up and has a blueish glow in his eyes (the hotel is controlling him) she runs into the bedroom.
Danny is chased down a dead end doorway by his father, his jack manned with a mallet, tries to kill danny. since the dead lady incident he calls hallorann with his shine. hallorann saves danny and wendy, the hotel explodes from an overheating boiler and they escape. there is now a sequel called dr sleep.
things in the hotel that were freaky: the dead woman in 219, the bartender, the parties in the ballroom, the people in the lift, the moving hedge animals, the person in the playground and the hotel itself.
sources: i read the shining not long ago and i am now reading doctor sleep, i recommend both books.

The Shining
American Haunting, The Shining, Poltergeist. So scary.
It depends on your own sensibility , personally I don't find The Shining to be all that scary. I suppose it's more realistic than the dead returning to life but ... to each his own.
