This is NOT a simple question. Superman's tasks include rightng injustice wherever he finds it. (When Spider-Man's uncle tells him "with great power comes great responsibility," well, Superman has more power than pretty much any other superhero. His responsibilities are mind-boggling.) He is also charged with protecting all life, and has sworn never to take a life if he can help it. The old TV show said he battled for "Truth, Justice and the American Way." He also protects the earth itself and any planets that contain life.
