Before Rick Riordan wrote his first book, he taught English and History for fifteen years. He taught in the public and private middle schools in the San Fransisco Bay Area and in Texas. In 2002 Saint Mary's Hall awarded him with the schools first master teacher award.
After his son, Haley Riordan, was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia he started telling him bedtime stories. He wanted to hear Greek Myths and since Rick had been a middle schoolmythology teacher he knew a lot of them. After some time his son got tired of hearing the same stories over and over again so he asked him to take the Greek Myths and add characters to them thus Percy Jackson was born. He eventually published the stories.
