∙ 15y agoOfficially, Burma has been renamed the Union of Myanmar, however some countries, especially the western nations, refuse to recognise this change of name imposed by the military government. The country changed its name in 1989, the year after the military junta, the so-called State Law and Order Restoration Council (Now State Peace and Development Council) staged a bloody military coup where thousands of Burmese were brutally killed. The capital city, Rangoon, is called, by the military government, Yangon. This is also not recognised by some other countries. But in 2005, the junta mysteriously transferred the capital from Rangoon to a newly-built city in the remote jungle in Central Burma, the city of Napyidaw - the "City of the Kings".
