A summary of Artemis fowl would be... ingenious criminal mastermind with the brains of a genious and the imagination of a child- a dangerous combination. He also has a soft side which comes out in some of the later books
It's basically about a criminal mastermind (Artemis) who discovers an underground world inhabited by fairies (as in elves, sprites, centuars, etc.) Then, using the book which acts sort of like their bible, and uses it to capture an elf (Holly Short) and demands for a huge sum of gold if they ever want her back. Of course he has his bodyguard (known as Butler) to aid him.
There are other explainations if mine isn't enough. :)
Artemis Fowl is about a old boy/young man who is perhaps the greatest mind in all of history. He uses his intelligence for illegal ventures, all of which have beensuccessful He is using his illegal assets to fund searches for his father, whose whereabouts are currently unknown He sets forth on a new venture that will bring to races together.
Opal Koboi is attempting to become queen or "empress" of the world. She was in a "coma" and is replaced by an exact clone that is brain dead. She wants to reveal fairies to humans. Also, she receives a human pituitary gland and rounded ears so the world will take her seriously. Opal tries to kill Artemis, Holly, Foaly, Root, and all other important people of the series. But, Holly and Artemis work together to try and stop her. As always.
It is about a Artemis Fowl, a boy genius. He learns that fairies are real and tries to exploit them of their gold. The book is about the struggle between the fairies, led by Commander Root, and Artemis and his body guard, Butler.
The next books in the series is mostly about the adventures Artemis and the faries have once they befriended each other.
This would be a spoiler, and it may sound crazy explaining. (if you don't want too much detail, you can skip to the bottom)
As Holly is leaving Fowl Manor with half the ransom gold, Artemis takes out champagne to give to himself and his staff. The fairies get ready to use a blue rinse (bio bomb---Kills tissue in a living body so that they die, without the environment being harmed), Artemis and his staff drink the champagne, and it is then revealed that the champagne had tranquilizer in it, courtesy of Artemis. It was his plan to try and escape the blue rinse. The fairies then release the blue rinse, and go into Fowl Manor to retrieve the gold (permission stated when Artemis said they'd be welcomed in when they are dead). Just as they entered upon the manor, some of the retrieval team experience nausea and dizziness, a sign of the magical law (you cannot enter a human's dwellings without permission), revealing that Artemis is in fact alive. While all this is happening, Mulch Diggems takes half of the fairies' share in gold and escapes, thinking to himself "Julius did him a bus load",considering getting him into the Fowl situation, and all authorities thinking he's dead. Holly wishes to keep exploring Fowl manor, no matter what her boss (Julius "Commander" Root) says, and finds the ransom gold in a bunker. Root tells Holly (through communicators) to leave the gold alone and come out, stating that "Fowl won this round". Upon exiting Fowl Manor, Holly thinks to herself "Fowl will be back, but will be waiting for him with a smile and a really big gun". After time is passed, Artemis is to be shown on the floor, looking at Juliet snoring on a chaiisse. Butler then demands why Artemis had given them tranquilizer, and Artemis explains his theory. Whatever state of consciousness you're in (during a time stop, which they were in at the occurance of the blue rinse), that will be what you stay in, claiming that the blue rinse was unnaffective to them, due to the fact that they were sleeping (also, that you cannot fall asleep during a time stop, no matter how tired you are, leaving forced sleep the only solution). When Butler asks why he and Juliet were not in, and why they took it on a hunch/theory, Artemis explains clearly. Naturally, if Butler and Juliet knew about the tranquilizer in the champagne, their bodies would naturally try to fight it. Artemis also states that it was a theory, but they did have a test subject (Artemis' mother, when she was given sleeping pills by Juliet just before the time stop). Artemis asks for forgiveness from Butler (him being mad about drugging his sister), and Butler willingly forgives him. As the book fades out, Angeline Fowl (the mother) comes into the room they are in, clearly cured from her mental problem (about Artemis' dad going missing). It turns out, Artemis used his wish (this is where the fairies got half the ransom gold-Artemis traded half the ransom back for a wish from Holly Short, which was pointed to him being able to survive a time stop, but was not) to cure his mother. But, in the epilogue (not included in the graphic novel), it is revealed that Artemis did not use his wish to cure his mother in a gesture of affection, but that social securities were keeping an eye on him, and it would be a matter of time before he was put into care (him being twelve and his mother in such a horrible state). Also, that Artemis did not reveal the fairies to the world only to manipulate them more throughout the years, claiming it was a "different story". Saying that, all the following books do not hint at him even wanting to exploid Haven, and is predicted that Colfer had not an idea for his sequel.
So, as a summary: Artemis drank champagne with tranquilizer to avoid a bio bomb while in a time stop so that he can keep fairy gold.
The plot of Artemis Fowl is that a twelve year old mastermind is plotting to steal gold from the fariy race. He does this by kidnapping Holly Short, a member of LEP recon.
