The key industry affected was the production of iron and subsequently steel. While the development of high pressure steam engines by Watt and Boulton was crucial to industrial expansion, the earlier discovery of a successful method of smelting iron using coke opened the door to the mass production of iron on a previously impossible scale. The first Abraham Darby's pioneering work at Coalbrookdale, Salop (now Telford), created the basis for the later production of cutting edge technology such as high pressure steam engines, dependant as this was upon a ready supply of quality cast iron for key components such as cylinders. This is why despite the many cradles of industrialisation in Britain, Coalbrookdale in the Ironbridge Gorge is regarded as the sole birthplace of industry.
