Sugar in small quantities will actually help a plant grow, however in excess or over too long a period it can result in the death of the plant.

Excess sugar in the soil can change the water potential around the roots which causes osmosis to stop functioning properly. It can also result in the buildup of bacterial colonies around the roots of plants as sugar is a good medium for bacterail growth.

Sugar added to the water given to a plant can help the plant grow faster, bigger, greener and taller, because plants have the process of respiration (the opposite of photosynthesis) which needs glucose, which is sugar, and oxygen to help grow. By giving seeds and young plants sugar water it helps the plant grow to be greener because it is given a double dose of glucose. However, if you give the plant too much sugar water it will kill the plant because it will have an overdose of sugar and will kill the roots off because they will not be able to get the nutrients from the water that they need. There may also be bacteria that grows in the soil, as a result of the sugar. The most common bacteria is yeast.

When you give a plant sugar (through soil), its roots will absorb it, and will be transported from the vascular tissues to the leaves. There are 2 types of vascular tissues: Xylem (which transports water and minerals), and Phloem (which transports sugar). Although the type of sugar matters. Plants will only make use of glucose (a type of sugar found in human blood).
