When a person breaks a bone or has a cut, the cells at the edge of the injury are stimulated to divide rapidly. The new cells that form begin to heal the break or cut. As it heals, the cells stop dividing and growing.

The skin cells on the surface (or dermis) are dead. They form a protective covering. When they are lost due to injury, the body generates new skin cells to replace this.

The lower layer of skin is called the epidermis and it consists of actively dividing cells. When there is injury, cells must grow fast to heal the wound
