in Lourdes you pray and feel close to god.

Lourdes is not just a place to pray it is also a place to be healed in the waters, see a statue of our lady where she appeared to St Bernadette, and to feel happy. It depends on what you want to do. If you are travelling with a group or on pirlgrimage you will probably be given a programme of ceremonies to follow, there is usually a notice board in the hotel with programmes for groups staying in that hotel. Visit the sanctuaries, the Grotto where Our Lady appeared 18 times to St. Bernadette. Take part in the Baths and Processions. Visit The Boly Mill where St Bernadette was born and The Cachot where she lived at the me of the apparitions. There is an information forum within the sanctuaries where you can get information about times and organised guided tours. If you are travelling on holiday ther are alot of tourist attractions outside of the religious programme, The Chateau Fort, or the Pic du Jer hich has a funicular up to almost 3,000 feet giving you magnificant views of the Pyrenees. Find an excursion agency that run coach trips to the Pyrenees, The Basque Country and down into Spain, again there should be information at the hotel reception or on the notice board of these. There is a train station within walking distance of all the hotels if you wish to discover the surrounding area, Tarbes, Pau etc. The town itself is small, dont expect great shopping unless you are looking for religious souvenirs. There is also a Tourist office in the town centre behind the War memorial that will give you any info you need. Enjoy your trip.

Lourdes, France, was the site of an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to a poor, fourteen year old girl, Bernadette Soubiroux. The first apparition occurred 11 February 1858, there were 18 in all. Currently, Lourdes is one of the most famous and popular pilgrimages for people, especially to be healed. There have been many miracles at Lourdes which are fully attested to by physicians as genuine miracles. We are talking instantaneous healing of broken legs, complete cures of individuals on their deathbed, etc.

People of all ages, nationalities, states of health and even of different religions or none, go to Lourdes each year. You can go on formally arranged pilgrimages to Lourdes or just go as a general visitor. For pilgrims and visitors there is a lot to do at Lourdes. The main area of Lourdes is known as the Domain. There are 3 large churches in the Domain and a large open area where people walk around and where the daily candlelight procession occurs every evening.

Alongside one of the churches is the most important part of Lourdes, the Grotto. It is here that the 18 apparitions occurred in 1858. It is a place of quiet and prayer. Nearby are the baths where people queue to be washed in the cold water. Amazingly, after being dipped in the bath, people come out and dress themselves immediately without drying themselves and yet are completely dry.

For Catholics, people go to mass, pray the Rosary and do the Stations of the Cross. Masses and other ceremonies are done in many languages to facilitate the various nationalities that come. Thousands of invalids are in Lourdes at any one time. Many people, especially young people, volunteer to come to Lourdes to help look after them while they are there. For many this is a very rewarding experience, and seeing so many sick people makes them feel how fortunate they are.

Outside the Domain is the main town. Close to the Domain it is very commercialised, with lots of shops selling souvenirs. This is not done within the Domain. The town of Lourdes itself is quite large and always worth looking around. Lourdes is built on the river Gave, which also passes in front of the Grotto. Lourdes is built at the foot of the Pryrenees mountains in the south of France, in a very beautiful location. Tours are done into the mountains. A visit to the beautiful location of Gavarnie with its lake are run from Lourdes and both pilgrims and tourists go on there.

Pilgrims are also brought on historical tours of Lourdes and its area, featuring the places that were significant in St. Bernadette's live. Her home in Lourdes is one of the places shown. She also lived for two short periods in the nearby village of Bartres, which also features on these tours.

All of the above are but a few of the things that can be done in Lourdes. For Catholics, other Christians and general tourists it is an amazing place to visit.

On the first day, some of the time will be taken up by the journey and checking in to the accommodation. Then the pilgrims will make their first visit to the Domain, which is the area where the basilicas and the grotto are. If they have a tour guide, the tour guide will give them a tour and explain about the various parts of the Domain. They will go around the Domain area and make a visit to the grotto, which is the most important area of the Domain. They will usually have mass too. Depending on time they may do other things, like go to other parts of the town of Lourdes.

Why is Lourdes so important to Christians?

Lourdes is important to Christians because Our Lady appeared to St Bernadette and led her to a spring with healing water. Many people have been healed from the water and many Catholics go on pilgrimage to Lourdes..Catholic AnswerThe most important thing about Lourdes is God's message to us, which He sent via the Blessed Virgin Mary: poverty, prayer, penance, and the Church. The healings are just miracles attesting to the fact that this is a genuine miracle and we are to listen to it. In all the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin she has only appeared to reinforce the message of the Scriptures and Holy Church.

How many times do christians have to go to Lourdes?

Christians don't have to go to Lourdes any time. Being a christian does not require believers to go on pilgrimages to any place for any reason because Christianity is not about about how many times you go somewhere or how many times you pray each day- that is religion. Christianity is about a persons relationship to God not religion.
