The reason why we dentist recommend for a crown to be placed in a root canal treated tooth is because the tooth tends to get fragile or more brittle after the treatment, as a lot of portion of the crown is lost during the procedure and as it cannot withstand masticatory
force which is applied to a tooth during the process of chewing and tearing food and in case of the anterior tooth it is not esthetically acceptable also so we advise a patient to get a crown placed after a root canal treatment

I had a root canal done on a front tooth about 8 years ago. I never had a crown put on and it is fine. I buy the whitning gel off of ebay with the trays. Very reasonable price. Your tooth may discolor but the whitning gel takes care of that.

Don't believe others including a dentist when they tell you that you MUST have a crown put on a front tooth after a root canal. No you don't. Some dentists will tell you you do and others you don't. Do what is best for you. The best for me was to keep my natural tooth.

They will also tell you the tooth will weaken and must have a crown. A front tooth does not get that much pressure like a molar does. That is why they can crown it with a porcelain crown which is not as strong but nicer color and looks more like natural enamel.

Also some will tell you that you can not whiten a tooth that has had a root canal and it must be internally bleached. I fell for that one and spent all kinds of money having that done plus they have to drill a new hole in the back of the tooth each time it's done. It only lasted for me about 2 1/2 yrs. Then a dentist told me I just externally whiten it. SHE WAS RIGHT and that's how I have done it ever sense.

It's your choice NOT theirs. That's the thing to remember.

usually when you get a root canal there is not much tooth structure remaining and a crown helps support the tooth... so your tooth can break if you dont get a crown

Do you need a crown if you have a root canal on a lower left molar performed over a bridge?

If you have a root canal done, most likely you'll need a crown. But if it was done through a bridge, there is already a crown on that tooth. A bride is just three or more crowns fused into one piece to replace a missing tooth. It is possible that doing a root canal through the brige will damage the bridge and the whole until may need to be replaced if that happens. But that's not common.

Can a root canal and crown be done in one day?

Usually - yes. Today, dentists have advanced instruments and equipment that makes it possible to complete a root canal in one appointment. Not all dentists have these instruments in their office, and some choose to perform a root canal the way they were taught in dental school many years ago. These procedures can take two or more appointments. You should also be aware that a tooth that has a root canal usually requires a restoration called a crown. This is because a tooth with a root canal will tend to get brittle and will likely fracture in the future. The crown will prevent this from happening. A crown usually requires at least two appointments, unless the dentist uses a Cerec crown mill in his office and the crown ins fabricated while you wait.Yes. A root canal can usually be performed in one appointement, unless there is an infection, or other complications that require more visits.

Can root canal be done after a tooth has been capped?

Yes... if the dental crown is all perfect then no need to take it out. A hole can be created through the crown and root canal can be performed and in the end that hole is sealed with composite fillings ideally.

Tooth is sore 2 months after root canal and crown?

A tooth can be mildly sore two months after root canal therapy, because of the stress that the tooth has undergone. If the pain is more severe, it would be good to check it with a dentist, because the crown might need more adjustments, or there might be still some infection remained from the root canal.

What do you do if you had a root canal and the crown came out 3 years ago and now there is a lump on your gum with a little pus in it?

You should have had the crown replaced and that lovely little pus is a sign of infection which means they are probably going to have to pull the tooth or perform another root canal.
