Poe's mother Elizabeth died on December 8, 1911, most likely of pneumonia, not tuberculosis. His father, David A. Poe, died a few days later, probably on December 10,1811. Poe's older brother William Henry Leonard Poe, (most often referred to as Henry rather than as William) remained with his grandparents who raised him. He died on August 1, 1832. Poe's younger sister Rosalie was taken in by William Mackenzie and his wife and became known as Rosalie Mackenzie Poe. She died on July 21, 1874. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan and took the Allan last name as his middle name, just as Rosalie had done with the Mackenzie name although neither was formally adopted by their foster parents.
