MacArthur was not in the United States from 1935, when he went to the Philippines, until fired by Truman in 1951, except for one wartime visit to Hawaii to meet with President Roosevelt. Hawaii was at that time a US Territory, not a state.

MacArthur was SCAP - Supreme Commander Allied Powers, in Tokyo, from 1945 until he was fired in 1951. Korea fell under his supervision, and his command there included the US 8th Army and the X Corps, but MacArthur was most of the time in Tokyo.

He was succeeded as SCAP by Matthew Ridgeway.

President Truman's firing of General MacArthur, someone whom most people thought of as a hero, was widely unpopular and still is controversial. The firing of MacArthur for 'disrespecting the president,' gave rise to national, as well as, international disagreement, and questions about the powers of the president. Both the United States' ally, Great Britain, as well as its former enemy, Japan, spoke out against the removal of MacArthur, with Emperor Hirohito meeting with MacArthur as a show of respect.

Matthew Ridgeway. Ridgeway had been commanding the US 8th Army in Korea, replacing Walton Walker in that command after Walker was killed in a Jeep accident in December 1950. When MacArthur was relieved in April 1951, Ridgeway was promoted to full general (four stars) and replaced MacArthur.

General MacArthur had a born to rule obsession that came close to Adolph Hitler. Also, he was a condescending republican who had routed his own troops during the depression.
