Oswald succeeded in becoming famous and historic.

NASA was given whatever it needed to get to the Moon, in order to carry out JFK's goal.

While I don't wish to malign his memory, a lot of people have made claims that Kennedy was "just about to" do this or that (get us out of Viet Nam, end the Federal Reserve, etc.) but the fact remains that after more than a thousand days in office, all he'd managed to do is avoid nuclear war (every President since Truman has managed that!), lose Cuba, and use the National Guard to force desegregation. Granted, desegregation was needed, but there had to be a better way, without the threat of force.

The Secret Service tightened up... no more convertibles, no more announcing the route in advance, that sort of thing. With the government in more conservative (read: wiser) hands, there were fewer events like Cuba, and the associated Missile Crisis.

In the immediate hours after Kennedy's death vice president Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as president. I believe this took place aboard Air Force One prior to takeoff. In the long term, an ivestigation was opened which is standard with the death of a president.
