The first time he was jailed in 1921 for being part of a mob that beat up a rival politician, he created the SA (Sturm Abteilung [Storm Section], AKA Brownshirts] and set in motion whipping Germany into a political frenzy. By the time 1923 rolled around, Hitler had amassed 8,000 SA members. He lead the charge with his brownshirts into what became known as the Munich Beer Hall Putsch (see link below for more info on that). He essentially stormed a speaking hall during a political rally and fired his gun off.

After hiding out with friends for 3 days, Hitler was found and arrested. Due to Nazi sympathizers in higher levels of government, Hitler was given the minimum sentence for his crime - 5 years - of which he only served 1. After being released this time, Hitler published his book that he worked on for the duration of his imprisonment, Mein Kampf (My Struggle - see link below for more).
