In Britain all fruit was rationed because a lot of the fresh fruit was at the bottom of the Atlantic. The German U Boats were sinking cargo ships with the food goods they needed.
In the US Bananas and fruits that were imported were rationed. Citrus fruits, berries and apples were easier to come by because the US produce growers grew enough for the US and other countries. But, many people learned to grow their own fruit on small bushes.

∙ 14y agoFoods such as sugar, coffee, oils and fats, milk, bread, chocolate and meat were rationed because the military needed them to feed the troops. Troops require about 3500 to 4000 calories to have enough energy to fight and stay healthy enough to keep fighting. Another reason was that the US had to send food to the United Kingdom. They import a large amount of their foodstuff because they are a small island and cannot grow everything. They were on stricter rationing than we were. Foods that were not rationed were plentiful and available to England and the United States. Many people planted victory gardens so vegetables could go to the troops and the families could eat their own vegetables. If the Germans had not sunk many ships with food and weapons it would have helped with the shortages.
