Aperture and shutter speed control the amount of light that passes from the lens to the film or digital sensor of a camera. Aperture is the size of the opening within the lens. The lower the f-stop number (1.4 for example) the larger the opening and the more light is passed through. Shutter speed is closely related. It is the amount of time that the lens is open. The combination of the size of the opening in the lens and the amount of time that the lens is open determine the exposure.

How does shutter speed and aperture relate to film speed?

Each controls the amount of light allowed into the camera [exposure] Shutter speed required governs aperture setting. eg if you want to take a scenic picture good depth of field is required to capture clarity in fore, middle and back grounds. Here you need longer exposure by way of slower shutter speed. To compensate for slow shutter speed you will need to narrow down the aperture to prevent over exposure, think of the aperture as the iris in your eye, depending on the light your eye needs for a clear image to the brain so the iris will expand or contract to widen or narrow the pupil. In the case of a close up you will need shorter shutter speed and wider aperture. This is a thumb-nail sketch only. Putting the above into practice is something else, thats why the little automatics are so popular. But you get it right with a manual and you cannot believe the superiority of the manual over the auto. The down side of the manual ? you don't get it right as often as you'd like

What effect does aperture and shutter speed have on exposure?

Shutter speed controls how long the sensor/film is exposed. Shorter shutter speeds normally provide a sharper image. Longer shutter speeds give you more blur. If you're hand holding your camera a good rule to go by is to multiply you focal length by two and use that as your shutter speed. For example, if your focal length is 100mm--your shutter speed should be 1/200sec or faster.

The depth of field in a photograph is controlled by the?

Depth of field on a camera is controlled by the aperture. The aperture is basically the size of the opening in the lens. A large aperture (or opening) creates a shallower depth of field and a small aperture creates a greater depth of field. Aperture, along with shutter speed, determine how much light goes into the camera. The size of the aperture is indicated by the f/stop number. The numbers usually range from about f/1 to around f/64. The smaller the number is, the larger the aperture is and the shallower the depth of field, meaning less space is in focus.Additional AnswerDepth of field is also affected by the focal length of your camera's lens. For any given aperture, longer focal length lenses (telephoto lenses) have a much narrower depth of field than a standard lens, and shorter focal length lenses (wide-angle lenses) have a much wider depth of field than a standard lens.

What is an aperture of a camera?

Original answer moved to discussion page. The aperture is an opening within the lens whose size is controlled by a series of overlapping blades. It's sole purpose is to control the amount of light that reaches the film or digital sensor during the exposure time. Anything else, such as depth of field, is a spin off of its function. The size of this opening is controlled by settings on the camera shutter speed/aperture dial or on the lens. Many cameras do not have the ability to "stop down" the aperture before the moment of exposure, so it is not something most people can observe. At the moment of exposure, the blades move to create an opening within the lens just before the shutter opens to control the duration that this occurs. Together, they control the exposure. We quantify the size of this opening with F numbers. Simply put, the F number expresses how many times an aperture will fit into the focal length. Thus, in a 100mm lens, F4 means it will fit in 4x and will be 25mm in diameter. In a 200mm lens, F4 represents an opening of 50mm. This explains why longer length lenses typically have larger maximum apertures, and why the higher F number represents a smaller aperture (F16 must fit into the focal length 16x, thus it has to be smaller). The answer moved to the discussion page, while good, was more about the effect of the aperture and really belongs in a answer to a question about depth of field.

Is there anything else I can check at home to see why my Cruise control isn't working on my 2001 Cummins besides fuses?

Can you adjust the voltage on the idle control valve on a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo and lower the idle speed or is there anything else you can do to lower the idle speed engine RPM?

No you cant it is controlled by the the cars computer which is set by the manufacturer

Your 1995 Altima speed control does not work The light in the panel flashes but nothing else happens What is the problem?

i had to replace the speedometer head in my 93, however, not only did my speed control not work, neither did he speedometer, or the heads up dislay. Once the new head was installed at the dealer for $350, everything worked perfectly.

1997 grand prix manual control ac and heat works only on 5 do you need to get a new control panel also every else works on the control panel?

Sounds like it could be resistor pack at blower motor or low speed fan relay

Is there a limit to maglev trains speed?

Yes. Apart from anything else, there is the speed of light!

What happens if you take a risk while driving?

What is EPC in a Sharan?

EPC means Electronic Pedal Control. Volkswagen uses an electronic system, not just a cable running from the gas pedal to the throttle, to control engine speed. It would make implementing cruise control REAL easy, if nothing else. If you have an EPC light on...that's the car's Check Engine light.

Why is a speed boat fast?
