What was the effect of Eli Whitneys invention of the cotton gin?

When Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, it made it possible to grow short staple cotton throughout the southern part of the United States. Cotton replaced linen as the material to wear in the summer. Since cotton required a long growing season, it became a major crop for the South. Since it was labor intensive, slaves were the preferred source of labor. Since it required so much water, the South was one of the few places on earth where it could be grown in commercial quantities. As a result, slave owners considered slaves necessary. Thus, it maintained the institution of slavery. (It would be around 1900 before a commercially successful cotton picking machine would be created.)

What are positive and negative effects of the cotton boom?

Positive: -boosted the economy immensely in the southern regions of the united states. - Cotton began to be traded amoungst the states, causing a growth in port cities such as Savannah, GA & Charleston, SC. NEGATIVE: -slavery exploded in the south ( even though there was a congressional ban on the importation of slaves put into effect in 1808.) -cotton was the MAJOR crop produced in the south, this made the south very over reliant on cotton.

How did the cotton gin effect the economy in its time?

The cotton gin allowed the growers to grow more cotton. Before the gin was invented the cotton seeds were hard to get out of the boll. The cotton boll is closely packed and very hard to get all the seeds removed and they had to do it by hand. The gin had teeth that when they were turned the handle it pulled the cotton apart and the seeds fell to the bottom. By having the ability to do this they could grow more cotton, buy more slaves to pick/process the cotton, and they could sell more cotton. Most of the cotton was sold to the Britain and when the civil war started the southern states expected it to help them because of the cotton. They didn't need it since they had bought so much all ready. The plantations really began to grow because of the invention and the population of slaves also grew. People became very rich and the south more powerful.
