There are many steps to becoming a pilot. The first step is getting your private pilot certificate. Most students do their initial training in a single-engined, land-based plane. You can not be payed for being a private pilot. Then you get your instrument rating certificate. Then you get the commercial pilot rating and can get paid to fly customers.

You need (In the US) 45 hours to get a Private pilot license, 45 for instrument (IFR), 250 hours to get a Commercial license and 1500 hours of flight time and 500 hours of cross-country flight time to go into the airlines. As to get into the airlines, a 4 year degree will help

bare minimum, a bachelor's degree. preferably in aeronautical engineering.there are ROTC programs that will guide you as to degree choice.
