The 13 stripes on the American flag represent the original 13 colonies of America:

  1. Delaware
  2. Pennsylvania
  3. New Jersey
  4. Georgia
  5. Connecticut
  6. Massachusetts
  7. Maryland
  8. South Carolina
  9. New Hampshire
  10. Virginia
  11. New York
  12. North Carolina
  13. Rhode Island

The flag held 15 stars and 15 stripes to also represent Vermont and Kentucky, but when they saw that they would have continually add stripes, they decided to just add stars and they lowered the amount of stripes back to 13. The 15 stars and stripes flag was used from May 1, 1795-July 3, 1818 and is the only American flag that features more than 13 stripes.
