The tonsure (shaving the head) is used in some circles as an outward sign of dedication to priestly or god centered role. It may be a one-time thing or it may be maintained continually, depending on the requirements of the group adhering to it. It is not widely used in Christianity but is found in some monastic orders of Catholicism such as Trappists.
It's called a tonsure, specifically a roman catholic tonsure. It isn't really common today...
