It is often believed the seven-pointed star represents the first seven verses of the Koran, which is the Islamic holy book. The official website of King Hussein (1953-1999) states: "The Jordan flag symbolizes the Kingdom's roots in the Great Arab Revolt of 1916, as it is adapted from the revolt banner. The black, white and green bands represent the Arab Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid dynasties respectively, while the crimson triangle joining the bands represents the Hashemite dynasty. The seven-pointed Islamic star set in the center of the crimson triangle represents the unity of Arab peoples in Jordan. *** actually some may say that the seven pointed star represents the number of hills in the city amman, since the city was built on seven hills.***

The horizontal colors stand for the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid Caliphates. The red triangle is for the Hashemite dynasty and the Arab Revolt. The seven pointed star, which is the only feature that distinguishes Jordan's flag from that of Palestine, has a dual meaning: it stands for the seven verses of the first surahin the Qur'an, and also stands for the unity of the Arab peoples. Some believe it also refers to the seven hills on which Amman, the capital, was built. The colors of the Jordanian flag are those of the Pan-Arab flag. They were first used in 1917 to represent "pan-Arabianism," which sought independence from the Ottoman Empire. The star at the hoist was added in 1928, when Jordan gained nominal independence.

The Jordan flag consists of horizontal stripes of black, white, and green, with a triangle on the left hand side. The triangle has a seven-pointed star in the centre.

The black represents the Abbassid Caliphate of Islam, The white represents the Ummayyed Caliphite of Islam, and the green represents the Fatihid of Islam. The red triangle represents the great Arab Revolt and the seven-pointed star represents the seven verses of the first surat of the Quran.
