St. Juan Diego (born Cuauhtlatoatzin) is the first Roman Catholic indigenous American saint. He was an Indian born in 1474 in Cuauhtitlan. He and his wife, María Lucía, were among the first to be baptized after the arrival of the main group of twelve Franciscan missionaries in Mexico in 1524. Maria Lucia died in 1529. He is said to have been granted an apparition of the Virgin Mary on four separate occasions in December 1531 when he was 57 years old at the hill of Tepeyac, then outside but now well within metropolitan Mexico City.

According to the Guadalupe tradition a poor Indian named Juan Diego saw a vision of the Virgin Mary on December 9, 1531, asking him to have a chapel built in Tepeyac in her honor. 1531 was barely ten years after the Spanish Conquest.

Bishop de Zumárraga at first rebuffed Diego and requested a sign. At the fourth apparition the Virgin instructed him to pick the flowers growing unseasonably on the hill at Tepeyac, fill his agave fiber tilma with them and take them to the bishop. When he opened his cape and the flowers fell out, a miraculous likeness of the Virgin Mary was found imprinted upon it. The bishop was convinced. Evidently, the flowers had been the sign the Bishop had requested, unbeknownst to Juan Diego.
