Like most wars it centered largely around economics. The wealthy plantation owners of the south feared that the federal government would someday abolish slavery thus costing them a valuable source of labor. The south had a good deal of wealth and the northern merchants feared losing these markets. That is why the north would not let the southern states go freely. The war began as a fight to preserve the union of states but later in the war Lincoln brilliantly issued the Emancipation Proclamation thus turning the war from a fight to preserve the union into one to free slaves. This stroke of brilliance from Lincoln ensured that France and Britain would not enter into the war on the side of the Confederacy. Doing so would have been politically risky for those European powers who had recently themselves abolished slavery.
This means that the civil war was brutal .....
No that was 1865, if you mean the American civil war.
You need to specify whether you mean the English Civil War or the American Civil War.
Well that depends on the location. Many African Americans eventually ended up fighting for the Union, but if you literally mean slaves then most were unable to fight, due to their masters forbidding them.
The Confederates were against slavery in the civil war. They did not want it.
