Cats do scratch. And cats scratch other cats. Because their nails are thin and sharp, a cat claw can penetrate into the skin and underlying tissues. Bacteria exists on cat's claws from its own feces and urine. When a cat scratches or gets scratched, the bacteria is pushed into the tissues. As bacteria colonize in one place, it makes an abscess-- a pocket of infection that forms under the skin. The outer skin can have a tiny scab or even look fine, but the infection is under the skin. So take the kitty to a Vet. Depending on the size of the abscess, the vet might drain it. Possibly the vet will give a shot of antibiotic, and definitely a prescription for liquid antibiotic. IF you give the cat all its medicine, it will be fine within 10 days. It can cost about $35 for the office visit and another $35 for the draining and medications. Note: Some vets used to write the prescription in the owner's name so the owner can get people pills to give to the cat (to save money); ask but your vet might not want to do this. But you can't let the kitty suffer-- it has to go to a vet now.

They might also be legitimately called tumors or growths, even if they're not cancerous. These words simply describe enlargements under or within the skin.
