How does epilepsy affect your life?

Epilepsy can make your body do random involuntary movements for example a seizure. Depending on what part of the brain is affected different parts of your body are also affected. However Epilepsy doesn't always manifest itself in this way. It can also be something as simple as someone fainting or like them having a momentary lapse in concentration, that no one around them will even notice, and sometimes even the person themselves won't realise has happened. They may do something like start talking to themselves repeatedly and then come back to normal a few minutes later. Epilepsy can manifest itself by someone feeling a bit strange for a moment.

Any of these things could of course be as a result of other factors. Epilepsy can therefore be hard to diagnose for certain. It is usually if there is a regular occurrence of any of these symptoms that indicates some medical issue is the cause. A good doctor or specialist would confirm that the person has some form of Epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a physical disorder that happens to occur in the brain and that effects the nervous system. It causes you to have seizures. 60% of the people with epilepsy are able to controll it with medication. For the other 40% there are other alternatives such as the ketogenic diet, VNS, and surgery. If left untreated it can really be a factor to your everyday life. How if affects you will depend on what kind of epilepsy you have and the severity of it. It could be anything from momentary lapses of conciousness to major seizures, so there is no simple answer. It is different for different people. Some people may have seizures every day, while others may go for days, weeks, months and even years between something happening.

All brains have electrical activity going on in them. Someone who has epilepsy occasionally has a disruption in normal electrical activity which will cause seizures. There is a wide range of causes, types and severity of seizures. Someone who has very bad seizures could do damage to their brain, but the vast majority do not have that problem so their seizures aren't a risk in terms of brain damage.

That will depend on the nature and severity of epilepsy someone has. Everyone is different. For many people, epilepsy has little or no affect on their lives. They may be on permanent medication, and have to be careful about doing some things, like not being allowed to drive if they have regular seizures. Other than that, they can lead normal lives. Epilepsy does not affect things like intelligence or the ability for someone to study or work. Only when they are having a seizure are they different than anyone else. You may know someone who has epilepsy, but be unaware of it because you have never seen them having a seizure.

Someone who has more severe and regular seizures may have more restrictions on them and be less able to do some activities. Epilepsy is not a mental illness, but epilepsy can be as a result of a head injury or some damage to the brain. So someone who has brain injury that results in some sort of disability, may get epilepsy as part of that. Their life will be more difficult, but more due to their other disability than to their epilepsy. Someone who only has epilepsy, will not be so badly affected.
