The silk on the ear of corn is the pistil, made up of a stigma, a style, and an ovary. Each thread of silk is attached to an ovary (potential seed), which will develop into a kernel of corn. The pistil must receive some pollen from the anthers in order to fertilize the ovary and make a kernel of corn. Without the silk (pistil), there would be no kernel. Removing all of the pistils from an ear of corn will result in no corn on the cob.
