DSL and Cable Modem, are typically capable of transmitting 512 kilobits per second (kbit/s) or more, approximately nine times the speed of a modem using a standard digital telephone line.
Broadband is a type of high speed internet that is usually transmitted through a phone line.

The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access. Broadband can be simply defined as a fast connection to the internet that is always on. It allows a user to send emails, surf the web, download images and music, watch videos, join a web conference, and much more.

Here are a couple excerts from the Network + textbook by Tamara Dean (provided through Central Texas College) that might shed some light on what broadband cable is/does.

"Broadband is a term of transmission in which signals are modulated as RF (radio frequency) analog waves that use different frequency ranges."

"In the field of networking, some terms have more than one meaning, depending on their context. Broadband is one of those terms. The broadband described... is the transmission system that carries RF signals across multiple channels on a coaxial cable, as used by cable TV. This definition was the original meaning of broadband. However, broadband has evolved to mean any of several different network types that use digital signaling to transmit data at very high transmission rates."

"Coaxial Cable: A type of cable that consists of a central metal conducting core, which might be solid or stranded and is often made of copper, surrounded by an insulator, a braided metal shielding, called braiding, and an outer cover, called the sheath or jacket. Coaxial cable, called 'coax' for short, was the foundation for Ethernet networks in the 1980s. Today it's used to connect cable Internet and cable TV systems."
