It makes you feel good.Morphine and codeine acts on the opiod recepters in the brain effects include, slower heart rate, overwhelming feelings of great well being. Naturally if you went on a run until it hurt your feelings are not too different from those who have been using opium. Opium replaces the high that one would get if he was doing something physically active.

The effects of opiates are either short or long term. Short term effect include: the absence of pain, feelings of euphoria and a sense of emotional detachment as well as a loss of appetite and a reduced sex drive finally sleepiness, mood swings, feelings of nausea and vomiting. Long term effects include: mental/emotional and physical health problems, it damages all major organs leading to extreme weight loss, and IV users have collapsed veins, you are more susceptible to Infectious Diseases, respiratory failure and the final result can be death. Not a pretty picture. Make you wonder why people take them.
