Catholic AnswerThe primary role of the local pastor (priest in charge of a parish) is to offer Mass for the people of the parish. The very word, priest, means one who sacrifices, and the Mass is the ultimate sacrifice, Our Blessed Lord's sacrifice of His life to the Father for our salvation. Every other role that a priest has in a parish flows from his main role which is that of offering sacrifice, particularly at Mass. The priest is an alter Christus
- another Christ, his role is to be Christ for the people in his parish.

He marries them, anoints them when they are ill, and buries them when they die. All along the way, he is there to counsel, listen to their confessions, and lead them to Christ.
