"Over powered in life"

1. Most thorough definition that is likely to fully reflect accuracy:

Irish (originally of County Limerick, later of Counties Cork and Kilkenny): reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Donndubháin 'descendant of Donndubhán', a personal name composed of the elements donn 'brown-haired man' or 'chieftain' + dubh 'black' + the diminutive suffix -án.

2. The most consistent definition that I have found that follow the name to its origins is as follows:

"Donovan is pronounced DAH-na-vun. It is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and the meaning of Donovan is "dark; brown-haired chieftain". ex: Football player Donovan McNabb."

Donovan has 6 variant forms: Donavan, Donavon, Donevin, Donevon, Donoven and Donovon.

3. It later morphed into the more popular and simplistic "Dark Warrior" in the hybrid Celt/Gaelic form.

4.It finally was relegated to a "Strong Fighter" again by the Celts alone.

The #3 is the most commonly used definition, all though you will notice that several of histories notable Donovan's have been star athlete's, entertainers, or otherwise prominent professionals -- many of whom are of African or dark-haired Celtic decent, leaving #2 the most relevant definition by today's standards.

If your son's football, Wrestling, or boxing coach has Donovan anywhere in his name -- there's a greater likelihood that he will make him a champion. Most men with the name Donovan are disposed to create other leaders.
