The philosophy of Confucius (551-479 B.C.E.) has endured even until today. He was concerned with morals and good government, and believed that rulers and educated men had an obligation to set good examples, and to rule by persuasion rather than threats of punishment. After his death, about 70 of his disciples compiled his sayings into a book called the Lun-yu or Analects.

Confucian philosophy centers on the compassion and of loving others. Confucius argued that the only real understanding of a subject came from long and careful study and not by intuition. He taught his students morality, proper speech, government, and the refined arts. He wrote five books referred to as the "Five Classics" that form the canons of Confucianism.

Confucius's philosophy was later to be defined as "Utilitarianism" by John Stuart Mills. He worked with the concept of utilitarianism to try to remove the flaws that Utilitarianism allows, such as slavery and cannibalism.

Confucius

As a little boy growing up in his town in Qing Low (Ch-u-ing, Luh- ow), he was harshly beaten by his parents and mates. Because of these past memories that he brought with him through his whole life, he was very nervous and was always cautious before her tried something new. Even though he had a bad childhood, he used this to make one part of his philosophy. It was one of the key things that was mentioned in his philosophy; struggles shan't overcome you, but they shall only make you stronger.

The philosophy that Confucius made was very long and complex but the main things mentioned in it were:

  • The Qufu (an ancient custom of living)
  • The Qingnai (the war style of fighting)
  • The Tingwa (the harmony and freedom inside)
