Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. In other words, the body actually attacks its own cells. The immune system mistakes some part of the body as a pathogen and attacks it. In otherwords, our own body's ceels can not recognise a liitle changesells of the same type. This may be restricted to certain organs (e.g. in chagas disease) or involve a particular tissue in different places (e.g. Goodpasture's disease which may affect the basement membrane in both the lung and the kidney).

Definition

Autoimmune disorders are conditions in which a person's immune system attacks the body's own cells, causing tissue destruction.

Description

Autoimmunity is accepted as the cause of a wide range of disorders, and it is suspected to be responsible for many more. Autoimmune diseases are classified as either general, in which the autoimmune reaction takes place simultaneously in a number of tissues, or organ specific, in which the autoimmune reaction targets a single organ.

Autoimmune is a word used in medicine to denote a disease where the immune system is acting against the body abnormally. For instance, Graves disease is an autoimmune disease where the body makes antibodies (usually used to fight infection) against a receptor on the thyroid gland. This particular antibody also have the special ability to activate the receptors, turning the thyroid gland "on." As a result, the patient experiences symptoms of hyperthyroidism (cold intolerance, fevers, fast heart rate, dry skin, accentuated reflexes, etc). There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of autoimmune diseases of which we are aware, and more discoveries are being made all the time.
