The question as to how to be accepted into Oxford is one which can never be precisely answered, simply because all students have different strengths. There are, however, a few key points in which you must succeed.

  • Top Grades - For British students, you will need at least 8 A or A* grades at GCSE to be considered for a place at Oxford. As long as you meet that requirement, don't worry too much about your GCSE grades; they are largely discounted as long as you have at least the required 8. Similarly, you will want very good AS level results - expect competitors for a place to have 4 strong A grades at AS level, with some science or maths students having 5 or 6.
  • Admissions Test - The majority of courses at the University of Oxford will require admissions tests before you are invited to interview. These include the HAT (History), BMAT (Biomedical Sciences), ELAT (English) and TSA (PPE, Economics and Management etc.). Scoring highly on these tests is what will qualify you for interview - a poor performance on an admissions test (if one in required) will mean that you are not considered any further.
  • Interview - Your interview at Oxford is the key point for your admission for an undergraduate degree. Your interview can be on a range of topics, varying between subject as well as college. You may be asked to provide a piece of written work around which you will have a discussion (similar to an Oxford Tutorial, if you are accepted) or else you may be asked challenging questions or given an unseen source to read.

What tutors are looking for in successful applicants is passion for a subject, an intellectual curiosity and simply the ability to perform to Oxford standard. Does being rejected mean you are not good enough? Certainly not - it just means that the Tutors felt that other students would be better suited to the teaching and examination style of Oxford.

1 - Get some solid A-levels, you need a minimum average of 85% if you ever hope to get to Cambridge, an A-level in Maths helps a lot too.

2 - Get a golden medal or an outstanding achievement in something like a national Olympiad or some well known competition or test.

3 - Write an awesome personal statement, tell them you are interested in quite a lot of fields, and you have way too many talents, while keeping the modesty.

4 - Bring great recommendation letters that doesn't just say you are so good, but rather you are the best they've had in a long time.

5 - Impress the folks in the interview, be very honest and interactive, the interviewers are the ones who will teach you later so they will look for someone they'll enjoy teaching.

Oxford University is not in London. It is in Oxford, England. To apply to Oxford University you would need to make an application on UCAS.com. However, the deadline for admission for the 2012 school year has passed. The application for the 2013 school year will be available starting this coming summer and is due mid October.

The application process is fairly simple. You fill out the application on UCAS and depending on your chosen course you have have to send written work to the University and/or take an admissions test. You are contacted end of November about whether or not you have been invited for an interview. The interviews take place early December and you find out late December/early January whether or not you have been admitted.

At bare minimum, most colleges at Oxford will require AAA* but even this is not a guarantee, however this should get you at least an interview.
