A very common thing people do when they get nosebleeds is take a tissue and stick it up the nostril that's bleeding in order to stifle the blood. This is effective, but it's not the best. When a nosebleed occurs, a blood vessel in your nose ruptures. Once the bloody nose ends, a scab is formed. With a tissue up your nose, pulling it out can cause the scab to heal improperly, or tear it off completely, which can lead to more bloody noses.
What you really want to do is pinch the tip of your nose shut. Basically you're taking your index finger and thumb, and shutting your nostrils. Just relax and hold it their for around 15 minutes, yes it can get pretty tedious, watch a TV show and the time will fly, and then let go. If it's still bleeding, just keep holding it. If it doesn't stop after 30 minutes, you should go to an emergency room.
If you are frequently plagued with nosebleeds, you should see a doctor. Chances are it's nothing serious, but the doctors can perform nasal cauterization in order to relieve you from the ailment.
