You don't have to do anything to it, unless your car actually won't move. Then you might need snow chains for your tires, or a shovel. Snow tires help, but aren't worth getting just for the winter. It will also help to have plenty of wiper fluid, because snowy roads means a lot of salt and other chemicals spraying onto your windshield. There are winter wiper blades as well, and these may be worth the investment if you're spending a cold winter somewhere.
There are techniques to winter driving, but just go slow to start off with and you'll learn if you haven't driven in much before.
Stay in the car. Wrap yourself in whatever clothes or blankets you can have - even a piece of old carpet will help. Keep one window open at least two inches. Don't run the engine to keep warm, in case fumes seep into the interior. If possible, shove a pole (or some long object) with a rag tied on the end above the snow-drift to help rescuers find the vehicle.
using your gear shift to rock your car forward and backward
If your car does get stuck try moving it back in forth several times. If that doesn't work try shoveling yourself out. If it still doesn't work, get a tow truck and get it pulled out!!!
Watch TV, read, play games, nap, talk on the phone, use the internet, make soup and eat it and hope we don't lose power.

Not all schools receive snow days just because there is snow on the ground. For instance in the northern part of the country where cities often get heavy or large amounts of snow are more prepared (they have supplies of sand and/or salt to deal with ice as well as many trucks equipped with snow plows). The amount of snow necessary to close schools and businesses could be quite high and usually only happens when it is too dangerous for vehicles to drive until snow can be cleared as much as possible. The southern states which don't receive much snow and therefore don't really need these supplies in large amounts and therefore don't have them readily available for large storms which is why they are more likely to have snow days with very minimal snow on the ground. It could also be that there isn't much snow but the roads are very icy.
