Therapists are usually associated with psychology, whether it be physical therapy or psychological therapy. Therapy and the willingness to put yourself through therapy all goes along with the human mind and why it thinks the way it does.

An Associate of Arts degree with emphasis in Psychology combined with volunteer work at a behavioral health facility (while you get your degree, full two years) may be enough to get you a job working there assisting a therapist / intake specialist in some way. You would have to work hard at your volunteer job and show a willingness to learn. You would also need fixed hours to show that you are responsible and do not take your job position lightly. If you're willing to wait, a Bachelor's degree in Psychology will get you an internship as some sort of entry level therapist / intake specialist. I would also volunteer while getting that, preferably at the place you want to get a job. The internship will be unpaid for up to a year. But once you get in a place like that, you're in for as long as you're willing to show respect and work hard. If you want to go for the real job and real pay, you will need a Psy.D or Ph.D in Psychology (where you can specialize). You will also have an internship at the end of your Doctoral Degree, and that may or may not be paid. If your school does not offer a AA with emphasis, I would get an AA in General Studies and take all the Psych classes you can. Meanwhile, you can volunteer OR work as a receptionist at the place you'd like to work. You will always get considered for a position before the public if you already work there, because they already know you.

It depends on which kind of therapist. For example, there are physical therapists (these usually require a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree; and some hospitals are now expecting a master's degree as well). A physical therapist is an expert in helping people to recover or improve their mobility, by means of a structured exercise program; physical therapists work with patients who have a wide range of conditions from Arthritis to severe burns to paralysis; some physical therapists are experts in sports injuries.

Another kind of therapist is one who works in the field of psychology. A psychiatrist is a therapist who helps people with mental and emotional illnesses. Psychiatrists are doctors, and they have a Bachelor's, Master's, and MD (Medical Doctor) degree. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication and can also offer talk therapy. Related to this field are psychologists and counselors, who may also be considered therapists. They are generally not medical doctors, and in most states, they cannot prescribe medication. Psychologists and counselors get a Bachelor's Degree and then a Master's-- there are Master's Degrees that focus on Counseling as well as on Counseling Psychology. Some psychologists are expert in testing or in clinical research, while some counselors are expert in offering guidance to people with problems in their marriage or people unable to find the right career. Students who plan to do research on the brain, work in a lab, or study human behavior tend to take a Master's of Science; many students who plan to work directly with patients tend to take a Master's of Arts.

It requires at least a master's degree in counseling, psychology or social work. A Ph.D. in psychology will provide the most complete training.
