Pee on the wound Urine may help jellyfish stings feel a little better but will do little for the actual problem at hand. On the ambulance we carried a little jar of MSG, monosodium glutemate. It is also known as meat tenderizer. MSG is a protein dissolver, which is how it breaks down the proteins in meats and make them more tender. The slime on the catfish is the actual culprit and when stung by a catfish, this slime gets into the cut or wound and plays heck on the nerves. Spit into your hand and add the MSG. Mix until a paste is formed and place directly on the wound. Bandage and in about 30 minutes the poison will be nullified. This works well for jellyfish stings, bee and wasp stings. Listerine works best for fire ant stings. put some on a small cotton ball and squeeze out most of the excess, apply the cotton ball to the bite site and bandage with a bandaid and it will aid in the burning and can help with the little white blisters that sometimes follow. Clinically speaking, urine is best for atheletes foot. It is bacteriostatic, or free from bacteria and can help atletes foot go away faster. Just pee on your feet in the shower.

A common misconception among anglers is that catfish species have the ability to sting. This is far from the truth. The "feelers" or whiskers on catfish species are only used to find food. They act like a nose for the fish species. However, catfish do have very sharp spines on the dorsal and front fins. These act as a defense mechanism for the fish when they feel threatened. Strong muscles attached to these spines make them a hazard to anglers unaware of how to properly hold them correctly. These along with a slimy scaleless coat make them hard to grasp. When an angler gets poked with one of these spines a mild toxin can enter the wound make it more painful but ultimately non lethal.

Catfish don't really sting, but the two pectoral fins and the dorsal fin house sharp spines that can cause painful injuries. They are like super sharp needles that can stab into the skin if the fish is not held properly. Note: contrary to some beliefs, the whiskers will not harm you.

If you get poked, make sure to lean the wound well to prevent infection, and a tetanus shot may be necessary.

You should not worry if you are bitten by a catfish. it may hurt a little, but i have never seen one with sharp teeth. They have really small ones. However the dorsal fins on virtually all catfish have a very sharp spine, and some of them have poison glands at the base of the spine (mostly small species of catfish). Handle them carefully - those spines make a nasty gash in the palm of you hand that takes a long time to heal.

are you talking about getting bit by a catfish or getting finned by a catfish?

If you get bit, pull your hand out :)

If you get finned, roll the catfish over and rub the area where you were finned on the slime on the fishes belly.

The first thing you need to do is soak your hand or where ever the catfish horned you in warm salt water to help the sting, Catfish stings are caused by spiny growths on their fins, specifically the dorsal and pectoral. These spiny growths can inject protein venom in the skin causing much pain and can even require hospitalization. Assuming that by the time you have read this article you would have already visited a doctor; remember the remedy outlined here is a preventative measure that can be undertaken whenever you have to deal with either catfish, or any stinging sea creature. Catfish stings can be problematic from two perspectives: the first being the power of the venom itself that can cause tissue necrosis, which if you do not get looked at immediately, can require amputation of a limb; and the second, being a spine being broken off inside your body, which can cause some serious problems including granulomas and neural damage. The worrying factor here, believe it or not, is not the venom but the possibility that a spine is still left in your body.

Venom is a substance that can have wide range of effects depending on which animal it belongs to. Venom can be protein-based or enzyme-based. Catfish venom is protein based and will cause hemolysis - blood cell destruction, dermonecrosis - abnormal death of skin tissue while it is still in the body, vasoconstriction - narrowing of the blood vessels, and inflammation. However, the good news is that if you want to disable the venom all you need to do is place your hand in some hot water of 45 degrees centigrade for about ten minutes and you will destroy the venom protein. If this is not possible, take some meat tenderizer papain with you on your next fishing trip and if you are stung again, apply this immediately to the wound.

Removing the sting itself is a surgical procedure. Considering that it could be some time before you reach a hospital if you are stung again, always carry some surgical tweezers or forceps with you when you venture out fishing. To remove the embedded spine, you must first locate it. This can be a dangerous procedure to do on your own if the spine is lodged deep within your flesh but if you follow the path of the entry wound, you will encounter the spine eventually. You need to open the forceps around the spine, clamp it, and then slowly pull it out to avoid major tissue damage. Again, this is a dangerous procedure, so wait until you get to a hospital instead.

make sure they don't freeze to death, keep their water relatively clean and feed them. I have three baby catfish and they will even eat table scraps.

Catfish do not have a stinger. If you catch a catfish they have a barb at the base of their dorsal fin (the one on their back) that can stab your hand pretty good though.

Why do you use alcohol on a wasp sting?

Before you use alcohol on a wasp sting, bee sting, hornet sting or ant bite spray WD40 on the affected area. The pain will be immediately neutralized. Stings with more poison may continue to throb but the pain is gone. The only sting that I've had that was not affected by WD40 was from a hard head catfish.
