Macaws eat a variety of foods including fruits, palm fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers, and stems. Wild species may forage widely, over 100 km (62 mi) for some of the larger species such as Ara araurana (blue & yellow macaw) and Ara ambigua (great green macaw), in search of seasonally available foods. Some foods eaten by macaws in the wild contain toxic or caustic substances which they are able to digest. It has been suggested that parrots and macaws in the Amazon basin eat clay from exposed river banks to neutralize these toxins In the western Amazon hundreds of macaws and other parrots descend to exposed river banks to consume clay on an almost daily basis - except on rainy days.

PLEASE ADD New Zealand has a few native parrots, the Kakapo, Kea, Kaka, Parakeet, Kakariki.

The Kakapo (ground dwelling and essentially flightless) is vegetarian and seeds, fruits and emerging grass stems are the foods.

Kaka are a forest dwelling species, and are mainly vegetarian, with fruit and seeds, but forage in decaying wood for insect grubs, and use their brush like tongue to take honeydew (an exudate from a sap insect), and nectar from flowers.

Kea are the most notorious native parrot, alpine dwelling, stealing anything shiny, and actively seek challenges such as stripping rubber mouldings from the windows of cars!

(Regular users of some Canterbury ski fields carry a roll of wire netting with which they protect their cars in the mountain car park.) These are probably the most intelligent of birds. Highly inquisitive and exploratory. Mostly herbivorous, but are opportunistic and will scavenge from rubbish dumps, and were notorious (partly undeservedly) for eating the kidney fat of sheep.

Antipodes Parakeet confined to that island group, and are mainly vegetarian, but do scavenge round penguin colonies for scraps of fat on dead penguins, and for shell fragments.

Kakariki Mainly vegetarian feeding on fruits and seeds, but will scavenge carrion and invertebrates. (two species)

There are another few species of parrot, but introduced from Australia, either adventitiously or by escape from deliberate introduction.

The above data mainly from The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand by Heather and Robertson.
