The shield- represents our roots in under the seven flags which owned the island at some point in history (this is where languages were learned and passed down through generations) countries that own the Virgin Island were as follows: (Spain, France, Netherlands (Holland-England), Denmark, Scotland-Sweden, The knights of Malta who landed on the landed and was welcomed on the islands in 1651. (Romans, Turks, Germans and Portuguese) and finally, the last bill of sale was to the current owner. The United of America(USA) for price of $25 million in 1916.

Languages spoken by islanders are as follows: English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese and a dialect of English (Crucïan), a dialect of French (French Kwéyol, dialect of Dutch Creole and a dialect of German). although newcomers basically speak English,Spanish. French and some speak Filipino.Indigenous natives(The Virgin Islands were originally settled by the Ciboney(Cíbønéy), Caríb, Arawaks and Taíno inhabited the island way before 1000 A.d.) Islanders and their descendants still reside on the islands today.

The three arrows in the other talon represent the three major islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. the yellow in the U.S. Virgin Islands flag represents the flowers, green symbolizes the hills, white represents the clouds, and blue is for the ocean.
