A 2006 survey of Italians showed that 87.6% of the population considered themselves the be Roman Catholic. However, an equally, if not more so, credible survey by Ipsos MORI in 2011 showed that 77% of Italians are Christians (of which Roman Catholicism is a sub-sect). This would tend towards the conclusion that the religion is in decline in the country, which is considered to be the birthplace of modern Christianity and certainly, with the presence of the Vatican City, to be the heart of the Roman Catholic Church.

It is interesting to note that, despite this large majority, Roman Catholicism has not been the official state religion since the mid-1980s.
