A laxative works to speed up the removal of undigested material from your large intestine and colon. It hastens the removal of undigested food that your body was eventually going to defecate. Too many laxatives can mess up your digestive system, so laxatives should be taken as a last resort.

Laxatives can work in different ways. Usually, they work to essentially clear out the stomach and intestine and force a bowel movement to occur. Laxatives can be very dangerous, though, and should be used sparingly, if ever. but this is also a myth, doctors recommend long term usage of laxatives if not over used

Laxatives hurt you if you misuse them. Overuse can result in permanent damage to the GI Tract and a weakening and softening of the bones known as osteomalacia. The excessive use of laxatives also cause severe constipation, electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.

1) They speed up and ease defecation.

2) They have a dehydrating effect. Be sure to drink enough water.

3) They may cause dependence if used too often.

Suggestion: start with one-half of the minimum dose. Note that some laxatives work only 8-12 hours later, while others are much faster.

A laxative works by drawing all of the water into the bowels. This causes the feces to turn into a water like substance, making it easier to get out.

Does diarrhea help get pills out of your system?

Taking a laxative to get pills out of your system will not help avoid the actions of the pills. Most pills by time they get to your colon have already released their active ingredients. Some pills do not dissolve properly and are passed whole and without releasing their active components...cheap vitamins are notorious here. If you have diarrhea, these kinds of pills will leave your system quicker than they would have if you are constipated. If you think you are overdosing, you need to go to an ER. There are things they can do to counter the effects of the drugs.
